Attacks show how many times a team moved into attacking actions in the opponent’s half. It is a general activity indicator: many recorded attacks end without a shot or a dangerous chance.
Limitations of the metric
Attack statistics do not show how dangerous each advance was. The same metric can include both a quick exit to the penalty area and an attack stopped far from the goal. Therefore a large number of attacks does not always mean a large number of chances.
How to use attacks
The metric is better evaluated together with dangerous attacks, shots and intensity. For example, a large number of attacks with a small number of shots may mean that the team frequently approaches the opponent’s defence but rarely completes the attacks.
Setting in the algorithm
In an algorithm you can set the number of attacks for the whole match, first or second half. Due to the general nature of the metric it is preferable to use it as an additional rather than the only condition.
