The Second League for women took shape in the early 2000s amid growing interest in women's sports post-independence. It stabilized in the 2010s with UAF bolstering support. Notably, in 2018, 'SLAVUTYCH-CHNU' from Cherkasy dominated, winning all games 150:10 aggregate—a scoring record. The 2020 pandemic halted the season, but it resumed with new protocols including VAR. Stars like Darya Apanaschenko started in regional clubs feeding into this league.

Tournament format

The tournament follows a double round-robin format with 13 teams playing 26 matches each. The winner promotes directly to the First League; 2nd-4th enter playoffs. Bottom two face relegation to the Third League. Season runs August to May with a winter break. Games occur on regional stadiums holding 1,000-5,000 fans, adhering to UEFA safety standards.
