The Ukrainian First League is the second tier of Ukrainian football, where ambitious clubs battle for promotion to the Premier League and fight to avoid relegation. It showcases regional rivalries and delivers thrilling, competitive matches across the country.

History and foundation

Established in 1992 following Ukraine's independence, it replaced the Soviet Second League's First Group. Early standouts included future powerhouses like Dnipro and Metalist. Notably, in the 2000s, it nurtured talents for Ukraine's national team, such as Andriy Vorobey and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk. Post-2014, due to Donbas conflicts, many games shifted to neutral venues, heightening the drama. Polissya Zhytomyr holds the record with three titles.

Tournament format

The season features 16 teams in a double round-robin format (30 matches each). Post-regular season, teams split: top six vie for promotion (winner direct to UPL, 2nd-3rd via playoffs), bottom six for survival. VAR was introduced in 2020 for major calls.
