The Ukrainian Premier League (UPL) is the top tier of Ukrainian football, featuring 16 professional clubs battling for the national title and European qualification spots. It serves as the breeding ground for the national team and a launchpad for young talents, blending Soviet-era discipline with contemporary European tactics.

History and foundation

Established in 1991 post-Soviet dissolution, the inaugural champions were Dynamo Kyiv under Valery Lobanovskyi. The 1990s saw dominance by Dynamo and Shakhtar Donetsk, but the 2000s brought rivals like Dnipro and Metalist. A milestone: Shakhtar's 2012 title with a 9-point lead. The 2022 full-scale invasion halted the season, yet the league resiliently resumed in summer on neutral venues with a condensed schedule, underscoring Ukrainian football's endurance.

Tournament format

The season comprises a double round-robin of 30 matches per team. Standings are based on points. Since 2022, playoffs include top-6 and 7-12 groups for European spots, with 13-16 facing First League teams in relegation playoffs. Champions enter Champions League qualifiers, runners-up Europa League.
