The Thai League U21 Championship is a premier national youth competition run by the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) and the Thai League organization. It serves as a crucial breeding ground for emerging talents destined for Thai League 1 squads and the national team. Featuring U21 academy sides from Thailand's top professional clubs, the league emphasizes tactical discipline, physical conditioning, and skill development for players aged 17-21.

History and foundation

Launched in 2017 amid Thailand's youth football overhaul following underwhelming Asian Cup showings, the league saw Buriram United U21 claim the inaugural title in 2017/18 with a record 12 straight wins. A standout moment came in 2020 when Chonburi U21 clinched the shortened COVID-disrupted season with the stingiest defense (just 8 goals conceded). Reorganized in 2022 with regional expansions, it boosted parity. Notably, Suphanan Bureevorn exploded with 22 goals in 2021/22 at age 19, paving his path to Liverpool's academy.

Tournament format

The format pits 16 teams into two groups of eight (North and South) for a home-and-away round-robin stage (14 matches each). Group winners plus the top two runners-up advance to playoffs: quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand final. Running August to May with breaks for U20/U23 internationals, rules cap fielded over-21 players at three, enforcing youth focus.
