The Youth Regional League of Slovakia (Mládežnícká regionálna liga) is a competitive framework for players under 19, structured at a regional level. It forms a crucial tier in Slovakia's youth football pyramid, where clubs from areas like Bratislava, Trnava, Nitra, and Zilina compete to nurture talents and aim for promotion to higher divisions. This league fosters local football development and supplies reserves to professional teams.
History and foundation
Emerging in the early 1990s post-Czechoslovakia split, the league was formalized in 1993 under the SFZ (Slovak Football Association). Reforms in 2005 introduced playoffs for promotion, while 2018 emphasized video analysis for coaches. Notably, in 2012, a Košice side dominated an inter-regional tournament with 15 straight wins. It has produced stars like Adam Vajsk, who debuted for the national team.
Tournament format
Divided into 6-8 regional groups of 10-14 teams each, clubs play a double round-robin (home and away), totaling 26-36 matches. Regional winners advance to national playoffs for spots in the top Youth U19 League. Bottom teams face relegation. The season runs August to June, with a winter break. Games occur on semi-pro fields, scouted by top clubs.
