The Myanmar National League (MNL), or Myanmar Championship, is the top tier of Burmese football. Launched in 2009, it features elite clubs vying for supremacy and continental spots. Amidst the nation's turbulent backdrop, the league embodies football's role as a cultural unifier, drawing passionate crowds to stadiums across the country.

History and foundation

The league's journey kicked off in 2009, replacing amateur setups with a pro structure. Yadanarbon FC reigned supreme early on, clinching five straight titles from 2009-2013. The 2021 military coup halted play, but resilience shone through with resumption in 2022. A highlight: Shan United's 2014 shock win disrupted the giants; in 2019, Yangon United set a points record, underscoring the league's evolution.

Tournament format

Twelve teams compete in a double round-robin: 22 matches each. Champions earn AFC Champions League Two entry, runners-up get qualifiers. Bottom two face relegation to the First Division. Season runs February to October, pausing for monsoons. Recent additions include a league cup playoff, boosting excitement and stakes.
