The Myanmar U19 Championship (Myanmar U-19 National League Championship) is the premier national youth competition organized by the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF), designed to spotlight the country's top under-19 talents. Amidst Myanmar's evolving football landscape and regional challenges, this tournament acts as a vital breeding ground for future stars, featuring academy sides from top clubs and regional squads. It bridges the gap between grassroots development and the professional Myanmar National League, fostering skills essential for international success.

History and foundation

Launched in its current form in 2005 following Myanmar's AFC affiliation, the championship traces roots to the 1990s youth initiatives. A landmark moment came in 2014 when Myanmar's U19s, coached by Sai Htun Than, reached the AFC U19 Championship quarterfinals, stunning Australia in the group stage. Political unrest and COVID-19 paused play in 2020-2021, but it roared back in 2022 with 12 teams. Notably, in 2018, Yangon United U19 clinched the title unbeaten, boasting a 62% average possession record, a benchmark for tactical youth football.

Tournament format

The format emphasizes competitive balance with 10-12 teams in a double round-robin regular season (20-22 matches), followed by playoffs for the top four contenders and a relegation battle for the bottom. Games adhere to 2x40-minute halves on well-equipped youth venues with floodlights. The 2023/24 edition introduced a mandate for under-17 players to log at least 30 minutes per match, enhancing development opportunities.
