Kosovo Superliga
The Kosovo Superliga is the top-tier football league in Kosovo, featuring the nation's elite clubs vying for the championship and European qualification spots. With 10 teams locked in fierce competition, the league captivates fans through its high-octane matches and dramatic twists.
History and foundation
The Superliga traces its roots to 1945 as the Kosovo League, evolving into its current form in 1991 amid Kosovo's autonomy within Yugoslavia. Post-1999 war and Yugoslavia's dissolution, it relaunched in 2000 under the Football Federation of Kosovo (FFK), gaining UEFA membership in 2016 and FIFA shortly after. Milestones include FC Tre Fjorde's 2017 Conference League group stage debut after thrashing Dundalk, and Ballkani's dominance with eight titles in 15 years. A 2019 match-fixing scandal prompted stricter FFK oversight.
Tournament format
The league's format pits 10 teams in a double round-robin of 36 matches. The top finisher claims the title and a Champions League spot, the runner-up gets Conference League entry. Places 3–5 contest playoffs for Europe, while 9th and 10th face relegation or playoffs to the First League. Season runs August to May with a winter break.
