The Costa Rica Cup, or Copa de Costa Rica, is the premier national knockout competition in the country, pitting top-tier clubs against lower-division underdogs in a battle for glory. Sanctioned by the Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUTBOL), it has been held annually since the early 1900s, captivating fans across Central America with its drama and unpredictability.

History and foundation

Rooted in the early 20th century with informal tournaments in San José, the Cup gained official status in 1934. Deportivo Saprissa dominates with 38 titles, followed by LD Alajuelense with 15. Iconic moments include Municipal Grecia's fairy-tale run to the 2019 final and Saprissa's 2022 penalty shootout triumph over Perez Zeledon. The competition endured 1980s turmoil but emerged as a talent incubator.

Tournament format

It's a pure knockout format with up to 80 teams from Primera División (12 clubs) to fourth tier. Recent editions feature a group stage for elites, followed by single-elimination playoffs from round of 16. Early rounds are two-legged ties (home and away), with away goals rule applied until recent abolishment; finals on neutral ground.
