Costa Rica U-20 Championship
The Costa Rica U-20 Championship (Campeonato Nacional Sub-20) is the premier national youth league featuring promising talents from top Costa Rican clubs. It acts as a vital breeding ground for future stars who often graduate to senior squads and national teams, blending competitiveness with development.
History and foundation
Established in the 1990s to bolster youth football infrastructure, the tournament gained prominence after Costa Rica's U-20 side reached the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup round of 16. A highlight was Saprissa U-20's 2017 triumph, led by Javier López's 18-goal haul, paving his path to MLS. In 2022, Herediano U-20's 3-2 final upset over favorites marked one of the competition's most thrilling climaxes.
Tournament format
The format spans a regular season with 12 teams divided into two groups of six, playing a double round-robin (20 matches). This leads to playoffs: quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand final on neutral grounds. The season runs February to December, pausing for CONCACAF events.
