The Costa Rica U-19 Championship is the premier national youth football competition for teams under 19 years old, run by the Costa Rican Football Federation (FECF). It acts as a vital breeding ground for spotting and nurturing young talents, many of whom advance to pro clubs domestically or abroad in Europe. The event embodies Costa Rica's deep football fervor, with juniors showcasing impressive technical skills and tactical awareness.

History and foundation

Originating in the 1980s as part of youth development initiatives, the tournament solidified its structure in the 1990s. Powerhouses like Deportivo Saprissa and Alajuelense have long dominated, clinching multiple titles. A standout moment was the 2015 season, where Municipal de Goicoechea's surprise 4-3 final win over the favorite lit up the scoreboard. The 2020 pandemic led to a shortened edition, ramping up the intensity. Notably, it produced key players for the U-20 side that grabbed bronze at the 2011 World Cup.

Tournament format

Featuring 12 teams from Primera División and select Segunda sides, it's split into two groups of six. Teams play home-and-away round-robins in the group stage. Group winners plus the top two runners-up advance to semifinals. The final is a single neutral-venue clash. Running from August to May, it aligns with the senior league calendar, incorporating youth transfer windows.
