Turkish Championship. U19 Development League
The Turkish U19 Development League (Elit A U19) is a premier youth football competition organized by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), focusing on nurturing top talents from the academies of Super Lig and TFF First League clubs. It provides a professional-grade platform for under-19 players to showcase their skills, bridging the gap between youth and senior football in Turkey.
History and foundation
Launched in 2021 as part of TFF's youth development overhaul, the league replaced fragmented regional setups. Fenerbahce claimed the inaugural title, leveraging their renowned academy. A highlight was the 2022 Galatasaray vs. Besiktas clash, drawing over 10,000 fans—a record for youth matches. The competition adapted to COVID disruptions with flexible scheduling and has propelled stars like Arda Guler from Fenerbahce U19 to Real Madrid's first team.
Tournament format
Featuring 20 teams split into two groups of 10, the format begins with a home-and-away round-robin in each group (18 matches per team). The top four from each advance to a championship playoff group, where standings are finalized based on overall results. Lower-ranked teams compete for positions 9-20. The champion is crowned after the playoff round, with tiebreakers if needed. The season runs from August to May, including a winter break.
