The Russian First League, or FNL, is the nation's second-tier football competition, pitting 20 ambitious clubs against each other for promotion to the RPL and survival in this gritty division. The 2024/25 season promises fierce battles on pitches from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok.

History and foundation

Rooted in the Soviet era, it transformed into the First League of the RFU in 1992 and rebranded as FNL in 2011. Iconic moments include Krasnodar's 2011 breakthrough with their youthful squad, Tom Tom's 2011 playoff drama, and the 2020 pandemic-shortened season ending in July. Fun fact: Rubin-2's 2023 promotion as the first farm team led to rule changes barring such repeats.

Tournament format

Standard double round-robin format over 38 matches. Top three earn direct RPL promotion; fourth faces playoffs against the 14th-placed RPL side. Bottom two drop to FNL-2, with the 15th in playoffs. Foreign player limit: 8 per squad, max 5 on pitch, fostering homegrown talent.
