The Irtysh Cup is a prestigious regional football tournament held in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, organized by the renowned FC Irtysh. It brings together top teams from Kazakhstan and neighboring countries, delivering thrilling knockout action and memorable clashes that captivate fans across the region.

History and foundation

Launched in the mid-1990s by FC Irtysh to bolster post-Soviet Kazakh football, the inaugural edition in 1996 saw Irtysh triumph 2-1 over Kairat in the final. Highlights include Taraz's shock penalty win in 2005 and Irtysh's 5-goal rout of Zhetysu in 2012. The 2020 pandemic forced a shortened format, but it roared back in 2022 with Russian youth teams joining the fray.

Tournament format

Knockout format featuring quarterfinals, semifinals, and a grand final at Pavlodar's Central Stadium. Eight teams qualify via merit from First and Premier League clubs plus select invites. Matches are 90 minutes, with extra time and penalties if needed. The event spans 3-4 days during the offseason, ideal for squad testing.

Average goals per match stand at 2.8, spiking to 3.5 in the 2010s amid Irtysh's attacking flair.
