The Russian Championship in the Professional Football League (PFL) Group 4 is a second-tier division featuring clubs mainly from southern Russia, such as Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai, Stavropol Krai, and nearby areas. It acts as a launchpad for ambitious teams aiming for the First League and a breeding ground for young talents. Seasons see intense table battles where every game can shift standings dramatically.

History and foundation

Group 4 PFL emerged from the 2011 restructuring of Russian football, merging Second and Third Divisions into PFL. Previously known as Second Division. Notable: PFC Sochi won in 2015 under Alexander Tochilin, rising to FNL and RPL within a year. In 2018, Angasht Nazran dominated with top scoring. COVID-19 disrupted 2020, but competition thrived. Stars like Krasnodar's John Cordoba started in local clubs.

Tournament format

Format: 20 teams (variable) in double round-robin, 38 matches total. Winner promotes to First League. 2nd/3rd play playoffs with Group 3's 3rd/4th for extra spots. Bottom team relegates to Third League, penultimate in playoffs. Season July to May with winter break, plus cup ties against top divisions.
