Russian Championship. PFL. Group 1
The Russian PFL Group 1 Championship is the second tier in Russia's football pyramid, featuring clubs from the European part of the country battling for promotion to the First League. This league showcases regional powerhouses, young prospects, and gritty underdogs in a highly competitive environment focused on tactical battles and survival.
History and foundation
PFL Group 1 was established in 2011 following the restructuring of the Second Division into a professional league. It initially covered Central, Southern, and Volga regions. Memorable seasons include 2015/16 when Tekstilshchik Ivanovo claimed the title, and 2020 when Rodina Moscow dominated before ascending to FNL. Notably, the league has faced match-fixing scandals, prompting stricter RFU oversight. Players like Alexander Tochilin and Denis Kozhanov launched careers here.
Tournament format
The format is a double round-robin with 18 teams playing 34 matches each. The champion earns direct promotion to the First League; positions 2-4 enter playoffs with FNL-2 teams. Bottom four (15-18) face relegation or playoffs against Group 2. Season runs July to May with a winter break; VAR is implemented at key venues for better officiating.
Interesting facts
Average goals per match hover at 2.4-2.7, with defenses often prevailing due to physicality. Top scorer Andrey Myazin (Spartak-2 Kostroma) netted 25 in 2018/19. Standouts include Maxim Votinov (Veles Moscow), a set-piece wizard, and Sergey Oborin (Znanie St. Petersburg), a prolific forward. The league has nurtured talents like Fedor Chalov from Krasnodar-2 and early Artem Dzyuba.
