The Romanian Women's Liga 1 is the top tier of women's football in Romania, featuring elite clubs battling for the national title and European spots. It showcases the evolving landscape of women's soccer in the country, blending technical prowess with tactical innovation.

History and foundation

Launched in the 1970s amid socialist efforts to promote women's sports, the league began modestly with 8-10 teams. Post-communism in the 1990s brought challenges like funding shortages, but it rebounded with federation support. A milestone was 2010, when Romanian sides entered UEFA competitions. CFF Olimpia Cluj has dominated since, clinching over 10 straight titles. Notably, in 2019, Olimpia reached the UEFA Women's Champions League quarterfinals, falling to Barcelona.

Tournament format

The format is a double round-robin with 12 teams playing 22 matches each. Standings determine champions, relegations, and playoff qualifiers for Europe. Since the 2020s, playoffs for European berths and relegation playoffs have been introduced. The season runs from August to May, with a winter break.
