Liga 1, Romania's top football division, features 16 teams battling for the national title and European spots. Running from July to May, it captivates fans nationwide with intense rivalries and dramatic finishes, blending historic clubs with ambitious newcomers.

History and foundation

Founded in 1909 as the Romanian Championship, Liga 1 has seen golden eras and turmoil. Steaua București dominated the communist period with 26 titles, clinching the 1986 European Cup under Heinz. Post-1989, Rapid, Dinamo, and Unirea Urlați varied the winners. Notably, Oțelul Galați shocked in 2011 by topping the table. The 2006 playoff format boosted excitement and fairness.

Tournament format

Sixteen clubs play a double round-robin (30 matches), then split into championship and relegation groups for 10 more games. The champion enters Champions League qualifiers, runners-up and cup winners get Conference League berths. Active transfer windows bring South American and African flair.
