The Malawi Football Championship, known as the TNM Super League, is the top tier of domestic football in Malawi. It features the nation's premier clubs competing for the title and spots in African continental competitions. The league embodies the deep passion for football in this southeastern African nation of roughly 20 million, where the sport unites communities across diverse regions.

History and foundation

Established in 1965 as the Malawi Premier Division, it was rebranded TNM Super League in 2017 with sponsorship from telecom giant TNM. Over decades, it underwent reforms: playoffs were introduced in 1998 to crown the champion, and professionalization ramped up in the 2010s. Silver Strikers lead with 10 titles, while Nyasa Big Bullets hold 18, the most ever. A quirky note: the 2020 season halted due to COVID-19 but resumed under strict protocols. In 2022, Big Bullets clinched a third straight title, setting a record amid fierce rivalry.

Tournament format

The format pits 16 teams in a double round-robin (30 matches each, home and away). The top 8 advance to a championship playoff knockout stage to decide the winner. Bottom two (15th-16th) relegate directly; 14th plays promotion-relegation playoffs against First Division sides. Season runs April to November, tailored to Malawi's tropical climate.
