The Malawi National League, or TNM Super League, is the top tier of Malawian football. Established in 1965, it features 16 teams vying for the championship and spots in CAF competitions. The season runs from March to October on stadiums holding 5,000 to 30,000 fans. It blends African football passion with emerging professionalism, drawing scouts from South Africa and Zambia.

History and foundation

Launched as the Malawi Premier Division under the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), it rebranded with TNM sponsorship in 1998. Silver Strikers lead with 9 titles, followed by Mighty Wanderers and Civil Service United with 8 each. A highlight was the 2018 playoff thriller where Nyasa Big Bullets came back from 0-2 against Wanderers. The 2020 season halted due to COVID but resumed with strict protocols. Fun fact: Ezekiel Ndlovu scored over 200 goals here in the 90s.

Tournament format

Round-robin format: each team plays home and away, totaling 30 matches. The winner claims the title and CAF Champions League entry, second and third get Confederation Cup spots. Ties broken by head-to-head, then goal difference. Bottom teams relegate to Malawi National Division Two. No playoffs, but cup competitions like Carlsberg Cup add excitement.
