The Montenegrin First League is the top tier of professional football in Montenegro, featuring 10 clubs in a fierce contest for the championship and European spots. Established post-independence in 2006, it has evolved rapidly, blending technical finesse with physical resilience in its matches.

History and foundation

Launched as the Prva crnogorska fudbalska liga in 2006/07, Budućnost Podgorica claimed the inaugural title and dominated early seasons. Sutjeska Nikšić broke their streak in 2015, marking a historic first win. The 2019/20 season, halted by COVID-19, saw Budućnost retain the crown via coefficient. The league faced match-fixing scandals in the 2010s, but FSCG reforms bolstered integrity. Fun fact: Clubs like Petrovac have been talent factories for Europe's elite leagues.

Tournament format

The format is a double round-robin: 10 teams play 36 matches each (home and away). Top finisher wins the title and Champions League qualification; 2nd and 3rd enter Conference League; bottom two relegate to Second League. 8th place contests playoffs.

Interesting facts

Average goals per game hover at 2.4, spiking in Podgorica derbies. Top scorers include Radomir Dragić (46 for Sutjeska) and Vukasin Vukicevic. Standout players: Stevan Jovetić (Budućnost youth), Fode Ba (prolific forward), and exports like Marko Tuci and Nikola Krivokapić, who shone in Serbia and Italy. Known for sturdy defenders and inventive midfielders.
