Montenegrin Women's Championship
The Montenegrin Women's Championship is the top tier of women's football in Montenegro, run by the Football Association of Montenegro. It features the country's elite clubs vying for the title and spots in European competitions, steadily growing despite resource constraints.
History and foundation
Launched in 2014 following Montenegro's independence in 2006, the league started modestly. ZFK Breznica from Nikšić has dominated since 2015, clinching nine straight titles by 2023. A notable event was the 2020 pandemic-shortened season, where Breznica still prevailed. In 2022, Montenegro's national team reached the UEFA Women's Euro finals stage for the first time, boosting league visibility.
Tournament format
The season typically involves 8-10 teams in a double round-robin format (home and away). The champion qualifies for the UEFA Women's Champions League. Promotion and relegation link to the First League. Matches run from August to May with a winter break.
Interesting facts
Average goals per game hover around 3.5, highlighting attacking flair amid defensive frailties. Top scorers include Dragana Dedić of Breznica with over 100 league goals, and Milica Vukadinović leading 2023/24 with 22. Standout players: Breznica's Irina Radović, a creative midfielder, and experienced goalkeeper from ZFK Podgorica. The league has nurtured talents like Natasha Cicić for the national team.
