Kazakhstan Super Cup

The Kazakhstan Super Cup is the annual curtain-raiser to the domestic football season, pitting the Kazakhstan Premier League champions against the Kazakh Cup winners from the previous year. If one team claims both titles, the league runners-up step in as opponents. This high-stakes clash captures national attention and crowns the season's early standout performers.

History and foundation

Launched in 1990, the competition paused amid the Soviet Union's collapse before resuming in 1992. Spartak Semey claimed the inaugural win, thrashing Kairat 3-0. Across 32 editions, Astana (formerly Energetik) holds the record with 13 triumphs. Notable moments include Astana's 2014 penalty shootout victory over Shakhtyor Karagandy after a 1-1 draw, and the 2020 edition's pandemic-induced cancellation followed by a rescheduled showdown.

Tournament format

It's a single knockout match on neutral ground, often at Astana Arena or Almaty's Central Stadium. Played over 90 minutes, with extra time and penalties if tied. No more than 120 minutes plus shootout.
