The Kazakhstan Premier League (KPL), or Kazakhstan Championship, is the top tier of professional football in Kazakhstan. Since 2014, it has featured 12 elite clubs competing for glory, European spots, and national supremacy, fostering growth in infrastructure and fan engagement.

History and foundation

Founded in 1992 post-independence, the league saw early dominance by FC Dynamo Almaty. From 1999, FC Irtysh Pavlodar claimed seven straight titles. The 2000s brought rivalries with FC Zhetysu and FC Kairat. FC Astana (now FC Astana MХ) has ruled since 2014 with nine titles by 2023. Highlights include Astana's 2015/16 Champions League group stage run and high-profile signings like Jussiê.

Tournament format

It's a double round-robin with 12 teams playing 33 matches (home/away plus a split round). Champion by points total. Top three earn European qualification: 1st to Champions League, 2nd/3rd to Conference League. Relegation via playoffs since 2021.
