Greek Championship. League 2
The Greek Championship League 2, or Beta Ethniki, is Greece's premier second-tier football competition. It acts as a crucial stepping stone for clubs eyeing promotion to the Super League Greece, nurturing talents and fostering regional rivalries. Featuring 12 teams in the 2023/24 season from Athens suburbs to remote islands, it blends tactical discipline with passionate play.
History and foundation
Evolving from early 20th-century regional leagues, Beta Ethniki formalized in 1954 under the Hellenic Football Federation. The 1980s saw its golden era with OFI and Kavala dominating amid packed stadiums. The 2006/07 season shone with Panionios' surprise promotion. Financial woes hit in the 2010s, but 2019 reforms revived it. Fun fact: Euro 2004 hero Giorgos Karagounis honed his skills here.
Tournament format
Compact format: 12 teams play a double round-robin (22 matches). Top two promote directly to Super League; 3rd-4th enter playoffs with lower-tier teams. Bottom two relegate to Gamma Ethniki; 10th fights survival playoffs. Promotion playoffs feature quarterfinals, semis, and final on neutral ground. Season runs August to May-June.
