The Greek U19 Championship (Εθνικό Πρωτάθλημα U19) is the premier national youth competition organized by the Hellenic Football Federation (ΕΠΟ) for players under 19. It acts as a vital breeding ground for emerging talents from top club academies, where young athletes compete for the title and spots in European youth tournaments, bridging the gap between grassroots and professional football.

History and foundation

Launched in the 1980s amid Greece's youth football overhaul, the championship gained momentum in the 1990s alongside U20 national team successes in Europe. A standout moment: Olympiacos U19's 5-0 thrashing of PAOK in the 2007 final propelled several players to senior squads. It's been a launchpad for stars, with academies sharpening skills that later shone on bigger stages.

Tournament format

The format features a regular season with 14-16 teams in a double round-robin (home and away). Top teams enter a championship playoff group (top 8), while others fight relegation. The final is a knockout on neutral ground. Season runs September to May, with youth-adjusted rules like 2x40-minute halves.
