The Estonian Women's Winter Football Tournament is a distinctive competition held during the cold months, acting as a crucial preparation phase for clubs in the national league. Organized by the Estonian Football Association (EJL), it brings together top women's teams to maintain fitness, test strategies, and integrate new talent outside the main season. This event highlights the rising interest in women's football in Estonia, where the sport grows amid challenging weather.

History and foundation

Launched in the early 2010s to address the need for winter fixtures on snow-covered pitches, the first edition in 2012 featured four teams. It has since expanded to up to eight participants. The 2018/19 season was memorable, with matches in -15°C on artificial turf in Tallinn, where FC Flora Women clinched the title undefeated. In 2021, Pärnu JK used it for post-pandemic adjustment, winning all games 22:3 overall. Fun fact: A 2016 snowstorm forced a match into an indoor arena, a first for Estonian women's football.

Tournament format

The format is a round-robin system, single or double round based on entrants (typically 6–8 teams). Matches last 2×40 minutes to suit winter conditions and reduce injury risk. The winner is decided by points, with playoffs if tied. Games occur on covered or heated venues in Tallinn, Tartu, and Pärnu from November to February, with holiday breaks.

Interesting facts

Average goal tally stands at 3.2 per match, higher than summer due to attacking experiments. Top scorers: Kerli Pink (FC Flora, 28 goals over three seasons) and Anett Meesk (Tabasalu, 19 in 2022/23). Standout players include goalkeeper Liis Lill (Pärnu, 15 clean sheets), midfielder Helen Tohver (assist leader), and forward Pille Raud (dribbling wizard). It's a launchpad for abroad moves, like Elise Tamm to Sweden.
