Meistriliiga, or Premium Liiga, is Estonia's top-tier football league featuring 10 clubs battling for supremacy. It blends domestic rivalries with the pull of European competitions, shaping the Baltic football scene.
History and foundation
Launched in 1992 post-Soviet era as Meistriliiga, rebranded to Premium Liiga in 2020. Early winners included Tallinna Kalev, but Flora Tallinn and FCI Levadia dominated. Highlight: 2019/20 season halted by COVID, with Flora clinching title by 11 points. In 2023, Nõmme Kalju broke the duopoly. Produced stars like Enis Podgajski and Otto Vaikma.
Tournament format
Season runs March to November, 36 rounds in split format: 27 league games, then top-6 and bottom-4 playoff. Champions qualify for Champions League, runners-up for Conference League. Relegation/promotion via playoffs with Esiliiga B.
