History and foundation

The history of the CECAFA Women's Cup spans over two decades. The inaugural editions date back to the 1990s, but it became regular in the 2000s. Uganda leads the roll of honor with multiple titles, including wins in 2018 and 2022. Tanzania and Kenya boast strong records too. A memorable moment was the 2016 final, where Zambia stunned Uganda in a penalty shootout after a thrilling draw. The tournament endured pauses due to financial issues and COVID-19 but always bounced back, showcasing African football's resilience. In 2023, hosted by Ethiopia, the home side reached the semifinals, setting a new attendance record.

Tournament format

The format typically features 10–12 teams divided into two groups in a round-robin setup. The top two from each advance to semifinals, culminating in a final. Matches are 90 minutes with extra time and penalties if needed. The event lasts about 10 days, often on neutral venues in one host nation. Since the 2020s, VAR has been introduced in key games to enhance fairness.
