The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, organized by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), is a premier regional football tournament featuring national teams from East and Central Africa, such as Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Sudan. History and foundation
Launched in 1967 as the East African Championship, it was renamed in 1973. Uganda leads with 15 titles, followed by Kenya (8) and Zambia (6). Iconic moments include Tanzania's 2010 triumph after 22 years and Sudan's 2015 expulsion for match-fixing. Despite 1990s disruptions from instability, it has endured, fostering football growth.
Tournament format
Typically 12–14 teams are split into two groups; group winners and best runners-up advance to semifinals, then the final. Group stage is round-robin, knockouts feature extra time and penalties. Held annually in December over 10–14 days, often hosted by a regional nation.
