Cambodia Development League
The Cambodia Development League stands as a vibrant cornerstone of the nation's football ecosystem, dedicated to nurturing young talents and bolstering grassroots infrastructure. It brings together clubs from across Cambodia's provinces, offering a crucial springboard for emerging players into the professional arena. Integral to the Cambodian football pyramid, the league feeds directly into the Cambodian Premier League, with fixtures hosted at venues like the RSN Stadium in Phnom Penh, drawing passionate local crowds eager for the next generation's flair.
History and foundation
Launched in 2015 by the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC), the league addressed the urgent need for a structured youth development pathway. Early years were marked by logistical hurdles and low attendance, but investments from ASEAN partners and sponsors since 2018 transformed it. Notably, in 2020 amid the COVID-19 crisis, it was among the few Southeast Asian leagues to complete its season uninterrupted. Phnom Penh Crown Academy holds the record with four straight titles from 2019 to 2022. The 2023 season gained traction through national TV broadcasts, elevating its profile significantly.
Tournament format
Featuring 10–12 teams in a single round-robin format, clubs play 18–22 matches each, earning 3 points for wins, 1 for draws. The champion secures promotion playoffs to the Premier League or cup berths. Running from March to October, it pauses during monsoon season. Key rules mandate at least four U-23 players in the starting XI, fostering youth integration.
