Cambodian Premier League
The Cambodian Premier League (CPL) is the top tier of professional football in Cambodia, featuring the nation's elite clubs in a fierce battle for supremacy and continental qualification. Established to elevate the sport post-conflict, it showcases Southeast Asian grit and growing ambition.
History and foundation
Launched in 1982 amid Cambodia's recovery, the league crowned Phnom Penh Sports Club as inaugural champions. Rebranded multiple times, it became the Premier League in 2015 under the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC). A highlight: Visakha FC's 2019 triumph ended Phnom Penh Crown's streak. The league paused during COVID but roared back in 2021. Phnom Penh Crown holds the record with 9 titles, while Body Scientific Sport FC dominated early 2020s.
Tournament format
Running October to May, the CPL fields 10-12 teams in a double round-robin format, yielding 22-26 matches per side. Champions earn AFC Champions League Two spots; runners-up target AFC Cup qualifiers. Bottom two face relegation to the Championship League. Recent seasons introduced playoffs for third place, heightening drama.
