US Championship. USL
The USL Championship stands as the premier professional soccer league in the United States below Major League Soccer (MLS), fostering talent development and high-stakes competition. Launched in 2010 as USL Pro, it features teams from Eastern and Western Conferences, emphasizing fast-paced, attacking play that captivates fans across North America.
History and foundation
USL's roots trace back to the 1980s with the USISL, but its current iteration solidified in 2010. A 2015 schism with MLS tested resilience, yet under Francesco Fratto's leadership, it rebounded strongly. Milestones include Charleston Battery's 2011 title win and Phoenix Rising FC's 2023 triumph. Notably, the league has launched careers of MLS stars like Tyler Adams (early exposure) and navigated the COVID-19 disruptions with innovative scheduling.
Tournament format
The season spans March to October with 24 clubs split into Eastern (12 teams) and Western (10) Conferences. Each plays 34 conference games plus 4 inter-conference matches. Playoffs feature top 7 from each conference plus wildcard spots for 8th-10th. Culminates in the USL Championship Final on neutral ground. Complemented by the lower-tier USL League One.
