The UAE Youth League (U-21), part of the Emirates Pro-League youth system, is a vital breeding ground for football talents in the United Arab Emirates. Featuring squads from elite clubs like Al Ain, Al Wasl, and Al Jazira, it offers young prospects professional-level competition and coaching. This league bridges the gap to the senior Pro-League, with many graduates earning spots in first teams and the national squad. Running from September to May on state-of-the-art stadiums in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, it draws scouts from Europe and Asia.

History and foundation

Launched in the 2010s amid UAE FA's football overhaul, the league's inaugural season was 2014/15, won by Al Ain U-21. It turned fully professional in 2019, introducing transfers for under-21s. A highlight was Al Wasl's youth beating their senior side in a 2022 friendly. The COVID-19 era forced empty-stadium games, yet quality endured. Now embedded in club academies backed by oil wealth, it's produced stars for Asia's youth internationals.

Tournament format

Comprised of 12-14 top Pro-League clubs' U-21 teams, it follows a double round-robin (26 matches) plus playoffs: quarterfinals, semis, and final. Up to three over-21 field players allowed for experience. Weekly fixtures use VAR in playoffs. Winners claim the trophy and AFC Youth Championship entry. Rules prioritize locals, capping foreign minutes at 30%.
