The UAE Pro League, or UAE Championship, is the top tier of professional football in the United Arab Emirates. Established in 1974, it features 14 clubs vying for the title and spots in Asian continental competitions. Fueled by sheikhs' investments, the league blends global superstars with emerging regional talent. Matches unfold on state-of-the-art stadiums under floodlights, with the season spanning August to May, pausing for national team duties.

History and foundation

Launched as the UAE Football League with nine teams, it became the Pro League in 2006. Al Ain leads with 14 titles, peaking in the 2000s under Cosmin Olaroiu. The 2010s saw rivalries between Al Wasl, Al Jazira, and Shabab Al Ahli post-merger. A highlight: Al Ain's 2003 AFC Champions League triumph showcased the league's prowess. Lavish spending, like Samuel Eto'o's €27m move in 2011, turned it into a star showcase.

Tournament format

The format entails 26 double round-robin matches (home and away). Wins earn 3 points, draws 1. Top three advance to AFC Champions League, President's Cup winner to Champions League Two. From 2023/24, playoffs crown the champion: top four contest semis and final. Bottom two drop to the First Division.
