The Zanzibar Premier League is the top-tier football competition on the Zanzibar archipelago, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. It features the island's premier clubs, fostering local talent amid passionate fans and the unique island vibe where football meets rich cultural heritage.
History and foundation
Established in the 1960s post-independence, the league took its modern shape in the 1980s under the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA). A notable event was Zanzibar SC's 2010 title win; in 2015, matches were annulled due to referee controversies. Zanzibar teams regularly compete in CECAFA tournaments, holding their own against East African rivals.
Tournament format
Running from September to May, the league includes 12–14 teams in a double round-robin format: 22–26 matches per side. The top team claims the title; top three qualify for East African cups. Bottom two face relegation to the First Division. Games are hosted at venues like Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar City.

Average goals per game hover at 2.1–2.5, with defensive battles dominating. Top scorers include Ibrahim Saif (45 career goals) and Abdullah Abbas (18 in 2022/23).
