The Tanzania Premier League (TPL), or Championship of Tanzania, is the top-tier professional football competition in the country. Established in 1965, it features 16 teams vying for supremacy and spots in CAF continental tournaments. Amid Tanzania's football fervor, matches draw massive crowds in Dar es Salaam and beyond. Recent years have seen upgrades in facilities, broadcasting, and commercialization, spotlighting East African talents.

History and foundation

Launched as Tanzania Mainland Premier League under the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Simba SC claimed the inaugural title, kickstarting the rivalry with Young Africans (Yanga). The 1970s brought professional reforms. A quirky note: political unrest in the 1990s disrupted play, but a 2000 revival with Vodacom sponsorship revitalized it. Yanga's five straight titles (2011–2016) set a benchmark. COVID-19 halted 2020, yet 2021/22 delivered thrill with 89 goals in 30 rounds. Iconic: the 'Kariakoo Derby' packs 40,000 fans.

Tournament format

Round-robin format: 16 teams play home-and-away (30 matches each). Wins yield 3 points, draws 1. Champions enter CAF Champions League, runners-up and third to Confederation Cup. Bottom two (15th-16th) relegate to Second Division, 14th faces playoffs. Season runs August to May, with a December break. 2023/24 introduced VAR for major games to enhance fairness.
