The Tajikistan Championship First League is the second tier of Tajik club football, featuring ambitious teams from across the country's regions. It acts as a launchpad for young talents and reserve squads from top clubs, delivering fierce competition for promotion to the elite and survival in the division. Matches are played on a semi-professional basis during the season, drawing fans to modest stadiums in Dushanbe, Khujand, and other cities.

History and foundation

Launched in the 1990s amid the Soviet Union's collapse, Tajik football gained independence, and the First League emerged amid economic challenges. Under the Football Federation of Tajikistan (FFST) since the 2000s, it stabilized. A 2012 reform expanded teams to 10-12. Notably, Istiklol-2 from Istaravshan won the title in 2018, propelling them to the Top League. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic shortened the season, but it rebounded with enhanced safety protocols.

Tournament format

The league features 10-12 teams in a double round-robin format: each plays home and away, totaling 22-26 matches. The champion promotes directly to the Top League, the runner-up enters playoffs. Bottom three relegate to the Second League. Season runs March-April to October-November, adapting to Central Asia's climate. VAR trials began in 2023.
