The Spanish Championship Segunda RFEF Division Group 1 is one of five regional tiers in Spain's fifth football level, featuring clubs mainly from northern and central areas like Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, and Navarre. In the 2024/25 season, 18 teams compete for promotion to the Tercera División. RFEF leagues highlight local flavor: matches unfold on intimate grounds with loyal fans, and sides draw from deep-rooted traditions.

History and foundation

Group 1 emerged in 2020 amid Tercera División's overhaul by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), creating Segunda RFEF. Previously, these clubs shone in Tercera, pulling off Copa del Rey upsets—Racing Ferrol and Real Unión reached the last 32 in the 2010s against La Liga giants. Notably, Compostela nearly clinched playoffs in 2022 but fell in a thriller. The league weathered COVID with a shortened campaign but rebounded with edge-of-seat finishes.

Tournament format

The setup is straightforward: 18 teams play a double round-robin—34 matches each. Top spot earns direct promotion to Tercera. Second and third enter playoffs for another shot: quarterfinals, semis, final. Bottom three drop to Tercera RFEF (sixth tier), with one more in play-out danger. Season kicks off in August, wraps in May, pausing for cups.

Interesting facts
