Spanish Championship. National U19 League
The División de Honor Juvenil, or National U19 League, is Spain's premier youth football competition for players under 19. It serves as a crucial breeding ground for La Liga talents, blending professional intensity with youth development and drawing global scouts.
History and foundation
Launched in 1990 as Liga Nacional de Juveniles, it evolved into División de Honor in 1995 and split into groups in 2011. Barcelona and Real Madrid have dominated, with Atlético's 2016 triumph standing out. Fun fact: Puyol, Fàbregas, Pedri, and Yamal honed skills here. In 2022/23, Real Madrid edged Barcelona by 5 points.
Tournament format
Two groups of 8 teams each play 30 matches. Group winners and top runners-up advance to playoffs for the U19 Spanish title. Bottom teams face relegation to Liga de Honor.
Interesting facts
Average goals per match hover at 3.2, emphasizing technique and possession. Top scorers include Xavi Simons (17 goals for PSV/Barça in 2018) and Ansu Fati (16 for Barça). Stars like Gavi, Alaba early on, and current gems like Cubarsí (Barça defender) and Nico Williams (Athletic) shine, fueling La Liga pipelines.
