The South African Women's Regional League (SAWRL) is a vital tier in the nation's women's club football pyramid, featuring teams from diverse provinces and nurturing emerging talents. Overseen by the South African Football Association (SAFA), it plays a crucial role in elevating women's football amid the country's growing enthusiasm post-national team triumphs.
History and foundation
Established in 2009 as part of SAFA's women's football initiative, the league underwent restructuring in the 2010s to align with CAF standards. A highlight was the 2019 upset when an Eastern Cape side reached the final, toppling Gauteng powerhouses. It has launched careers like that of Teboho Mmoji, who progressed to pro ranks from here.
Tournament format
Comprising 12–16 teams split into regional divisions (Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, etc.), the format features group-stage round-robins with relegation/promotion, culminating in playoffs for advancement to higher divisions or the Super League. Season runs August to May with an off-season break.

Average goals per match hover at 2.8, favoring fast counterattacks. Top scorers include Nokubonga Skwatt of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (45 career goals); Orlando Pirates Women dominate titles.
