The Slovenian Youth League (PrvaLiga U19) is the top-tier youth football competition in Slovenia, featuring under-19 teams from PrvaLiga clubs. It acts as a crucial breeding ground for talents who often break into senior squads and move to major European clubs. The season runs from August to May, drawing fans, scouts, and coaches eager to spot the next generation of stars.

History and foundation

Established in 1991 following Slovenia's independence, the league integrated into the national football structure. Early dominance came from Maribor and Olimpija Ljubljana academies, producing players like Adam Gnahoua and Živoin Milošević. The 2000s saw heightened interest via UEFA Youth League successes, with Maribor reaching the quarterfinals in 2016. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic shortened a season, but the league rebounded swiftly, showcasing resilience. The 2018 season stood out as Domžale clinched the title with a record 12 consecutive wins.

Tournament format

The format pits 10 teams in a double round-robin system: home and away matches, totaling 36 games per season. The table leader is crowned champion, while the bottom two face relegation to the Second Youth League. Mid-season playoffs against second-division sides add spice. Matches occur on club academy pitches, emphasizing development with foreigner limits and mandatory local playing time. Since 2022, a league cup playoff has injected extra drama.
