The Serbian League West (Srpska Liga Zapad) is one of three zones in Serbia's third-tier football division, featuring 16 clubs from the western regions. It acts as a crucial stepping stone for ambitious teams aiming to ascend to the Serbian First League, fostering intense regional rivalries among clubs from Vojvodina, Belgrade, and western areas.

History and foundation

Established in 2006 following the restructuring of Yugoslav and Serbia-Montenegro football, the league saw early dominance by teams like OFK Belgrade and Mladost from Lučani. Over time, clubs such as Igrok from Pirot and Dubočica from Leskovac rose to prominence. Memorable moments include Trajal Krusevac's commanding 2018/19 title win and Srem Sremska Mitrovica's dramatic one-point victory in 2022. Reforms, including team number adjustments, have kept the competition fresh.

Tournament format

The format is a double round-robin with 16 teams playing 30 matches each. The champion promotes directly to the First League, second place enters playoffs against First League sides, while the bottom two or three teams relegate to the Second League. The season runs from August to June, with a winter break.

Interesting facts

Average goal tally hovers around 2.7-3.0 per game, emphasizing solid defenses and quick counters, hallmark of Serbian lower divisions. Top scorers include Milan Pavkov with 28 goals for Teleoptik in 2015/16 and Dragan Nikolić's 25 for Mladost Aptinski in 2020/21. Standout players like Pavkov, who later starred for Partizan, and prospects such as Filip Stefanović, who joined Red Star, highlight the league's role in nurturing Serbia's football talent.
