The Serbian Championship League 3, also known as Srpska Liga Istočna or Zapadna, is the third tier of Serbian football. These regional competitions feature clubs from eastern and western Serbia vying for promotion, survival, and a shot at the national cup. It's a breeding ground for gritty teams from small towns and Belgrade suburbs, where football serves as both passion and pathway for emerging talents.

History and foundation

League 3 took shape post-Yugoslavia's breakup in the early 2000s amid Serbian football restructuring. The eastern group kicked off in 2006, western followed soon after. Notable moments: Dubočica Leskovac's stunning 2018 promotion to the First League; Radnički Niš B's 2022 record of 28 wins in 30 games. The league weathered pandemics and financial woes, producing stars like Nemanja Matić who honed skills in lower divisions.

Tournament format

Two groups of 16 teams each: Istočna (east) and Zapadna (west). Each plays a 30-match season, with top two from each advancing to playoffs against Second League sides for promotion. Bottom two per group drop to regional leagues. Games unfold on intimate 2-5,000-seat venues, emphasizing physicality and fierce local rivalries.
