The Serbian SuperLiga, or First League, is the top tier of professional football in Serbia. Launched in 2006 following the split from Serbia and Montenegro, it features 16 teams vying for the national title and European spots. Powerhouses Crvena Zvezda and Partizan dominate, yet underdogs often create thrilling upsets in this competitive arena.

History and foundation

Rooted in Yugoslav football heritage, the league boasts luminaries like Crvena Zvezda's 1991 European Cup win and Partizan's 1966 UEFA Cup triumph. Post-independence reforms stabilized the format amid corruption scandals in the 2010s, prompting UEFA oversight. Key moments include the introduction of VAR in 2020 and the rise of homegrown talents exported to top European clubs.

Tournament format

The season follows a split format: 16 teams play a 30-match double round-robin, then divide into a top-6 championship group for title and Europe, and a bottom-10 relegation group. Champions qualify for Champions League, runners-up for Europa League. It runs July to May with a winter break.
