North Macedonia's 3rd League forms the grassroots foundation of the nation's football pyramid, featuring ambitious clubs from small towns and villages. It's a breeding ground for talents who occasionally break into higher divisions, with matches fueled by passionate local fans. The league spans all regions, from rural pitches to urban grounds, offering an authentic slice of football culture.

History and foundation

Established in the early 1990s post-Yugoslav independence, the Football Federation of Macedonia (FFM) launched the first 3rd Division tournaments in 1992 to bolster regional play. Reforms in the 2000s introduced promotion playoffs, while the 2010s brought foreigner limits. Notably, Tetovo's 'Bachovci' shocked everyone by winning in 2015 and surviving two seasons in the Second League. A 2018 match-fixing scandal in the eastern zone prompted stricter FFM oversight.

Tournament format

Divided into 6-8 regional zones (east, west, north, etc.), each with 10-14 teams playing a double round-robin (home and away). Zone winners compete in playoffs for 2-4 spots in the First League (Vtora Liga). Bottom teams risk relegation to the 4th Division. Season runs August to May, with a winter break. Total teams: 80-100.

Interesting facts
