Polish Championship. Regional League
The Regional League (III liga) represents the third tier of Polish football, divided into four geographically based groups featuring ambitious clubs from across the country bridging amateur and professional levels.
History and foundation
Evolving from post-WWII regional classes in the 1940s, it has nurtured talents from rural areas. A highlight was the 2015/16 season's fierce promotion battle between Lechia Gdańsk and Wisła Płock. Stars like Robert Lewandowski drew early experience nearby, with league reforms by PZPN in the 2000s streamlining it from eight to four groups.
Tournament format
Split into four groups—1 (north-east), 2 (south-east), 3 (south-west), 4 (north-west)—each with 16-18 teams. Group winners promote to II liga, bottom teams face relegation to IV liga, and second-placed sides contest playoffs for extra spots. Runs August to June.
