Paraguay Reserve League Championship
The Paraguay Reserve League is a vibrant competition for youth and reserve squads of the country's top clubs. It acts as a crucial breeding ground for talent, where young players gain professional experience under the guidance of first-team coaches. The league embodies the passion of Paraguayan football, blending tactics, physicality, and creative flair.
History and foundation
Launched in the 2010s to bolster club academies, the Reserve League evolved from experimental tournaments organized by the Paraguayan Football Association (APF). It gained permanence in 2018 with reserves from giants like Cerro Porteño and Libertad competing. The 2021 season was iconic, as Cerro Porteño's reserves clinched the title with a 3-2 thriller over Olimpia. Notably, stars like Miguel Almirón honed their skills here, starting in Libertad's reserves before European moves.
Tournament format
Featuring 12–14 teams from Primera División reserves, the format includes round-robin stages split into Apertura and Clausura (double round-robin). Semi-season winners advance to playoffs for the championship. Running from February to December with a mid-year break, teams play about 44 matches on academy fields or small stadiums, emphasizing squad rotation.
