The Paraguay Cup is the premier knockout competition organized by the Paraguayan Football Association (APF). It pits elite clubs from the top flight against underdogs from lower divisions in a thrilling quest for glory, where upsets and dramatic ties define the spectacle, embodying the true spirit of cup football in Paraguay.

History and foundation

Launched officially in 2019, the Paraguay Cup draws from earlier domestic tournaments. Cerro Porteño claimed the inaugural title, edging Sportivo Luqueño 2-1 in the final. Libertad triumphed in 2020, Nacional in 2023. A key milestone was the 2021/22 Superfinal integration, granting the winner a Copa Libertadores spot. Amid COVID disruptions, it became a showcase for resilience and emerging provincial talents.

Tournament format

The format features a multi-stage knockout: from 1/64 finals to semifinals and a single-match final. Up to 64 teams participate, from Primera División to amateurs. Full random draws ensure parity; early rounds are single-leg, later ones potentially two-legged. The 2024 edition kicks off in February, culminating in an October final, with the champion qualifying for Copa Sudamericana or Libertadores.
